Forchtenstein CastleMelinda Esterhazy-Platz 1, 7212 Forchtenstein
Dating back to the early 14th century, Forchtenstein Castle was acquired by the Esterházy family in 1626. They commissioned the structure we see today – a soaring edifice and bulwark that is Burgenland’s most imposing landmark. The Esterházys’ weapons and armour are stored here to this day. Prince Paul I, the founding father of the princely dynasty, also established his unique treasure chamber, which he proudly described as his “Kunstkammer” (cabinet of curiosities) in his will, as well as an extensive archive at this location. Even now, the castle is bathed in the magic of bygone days.
